Berkeley, California
This project is a unique affordable housing community for low-income and special-needs
seniors in Berkeley, California. It houses over ninety residents and provides
ground floor commercial space for the project developer’s home office
and the Salvation Army’s service office. The development has many features
integrated into its design to assist the senior residents as they age in place,
as well as many green features such as photovoltaic and hydronic heating systems.
Other design elements include intimate outdoor areas, trellises, landscaping,
and strategic building orientation, which help reduce dependence on mechanical
cooling/heating systems and increase operating cost efficiency. The project
is highly visible from one of the busiest intersections in the city and has
contributed to the revitalization of the area through an elegant and thoughtful
urban design.
